Wagner's Ring Cycle - October 5-14, 2006
Los Angeles, California
Kirov Opera Company

Conductor, Valery Gergiev
Siegmund, Placido Domingo

Also: Modest Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov

This tour was the long-awaited American premiere of the Kirov's widely acclaimed production of Wagner's Ring Cycle. Participants who chose the Tour Deluxe Package also attended Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, by the premiere Russian Opera Company - the Kirov.

This Kirov Ring Cycle was premiered in 2003 at the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg. It was the first Russian Ring production since before World War I. This production concept draws from Russian, Caucasian and Scythian folk myths. Many folktales parallel the myths that inspired Wagner, and combined together this is a new visual approach to the Ring that is internationally understandable.

To heighten our opera experience, our own personal Wagner expert, Thomas May, joined our Tour. Tom has written the book Decoding Wagner: An Invitation to His World of Music Drama. Before each opera, Tom gave us an overview of that night's opera; and following the opera joined us in a discussion over wine and cheese to ruminate over the evening's opera. After a monumental experience like the Ring, there is nothing better than sharing opinions with like-minded fans.

Tom's books also contains 2 CD's, illuminating various points made in the book. Tour participants received an autographed copy of Decoding Wagner, so they could begin preparing for this event.
